Here are the photographs I promised of the large pipes - The main tube is approx 700mm long. I've made it from 3mm thick foam board. With the mouth of the pipe constructed as shown it produces a very pleasing sound. I suspect that it might be possible to get a fuller sound by making the mouth parts out of thinner card. Perhaps 1.5mm rather than 3mm. This would mean twice the speed of airflow. |
| Having suceeded with this rough and ready prototype I went on to construct a neater model for use in the exhibition. I kept the length the same but made the width and depth slightly smaller - down from 100mm to 80mm. - The new pipe doesn't work at all! Curses! The workings of these pipes is a real mystery to me. There are so many variables it is hard to know where to start. In this case I'm working on a different project while I let it mull over in my mind. Pah. |
